It all started last night.
Shysi and I went to Old School Delights for dinner and I saw this huge chalkboard wall they have inside this cozy eatery. I want to do something with it. Draw on it, write on it, something...

Thought I should write them. So I did! Olivia, the owner, wrote back almost immediately. I'm glad she's on board with the idea of me drawing on her wall. Tonight I came back there, met Olivia and went straight to work! Starting with a small signage board in front of the store, I definitely found a new hobby! Olivia even treat me dinner: a big plate of yummy mee siam and fresh lime juice - One of the best client ever... :)

I will definitely come back for more writings, bigger board hopefully.

Another awesome collaboration!

Lauryn (a superb photographer friend - check out her portfolio) and I worked together to create her new set of namecards. So then to make things more interesting, they were done in letterpress! She wanted simple design and if you did what I told you and check her website, you can see lots of beautiful colors in her works, especially yellow. Plus, yellow is her favorite. There you go, yellow painted on each side of the cards. So excited.. And here they are.

About a month ago, I and a bunch of other wall painters stormed down to Double O.

Thanks to Francesca Liam, we got the chance to collaborate for their new spot at Queen St.

OneTwoDelta, ClogTwo and Dhiya were amongst the group. I am really really excited to be working with them.

Anyhoo,

I got to paint the toilets!!

My first toilet! Hey, it's the best lit spot in a club and people are ALWAYS lining up. There you go, my murals will definitely have its crowd. I had a lot of fun working on it, as always... And check out the glass door stickers. The printer did a GREAT job printing and installing them.

So, anytime you visit Singapore, come to Double O la... Drink drink can, check out my toilet also caaaan :)

Been working on some murals for kid rooms! But I can't show them just yet. Patient is a virtue. I will spill later. BUT, last week was a lot of fun, and this I can share with y'all...

6 of us, local artists are engaged in Iluma AIR Project. Iluma is a shopping center in Bugis area. Their mission is all about art and youth. Every week there will be a flea market and one artist will paint a big piece of art right there at the entrance. Kind of like a live art performance...

The theme is Creative Consumerism, just in time for GSS. I came up with a conclusion that whatever involves shopping, your wallet will never big enough. You've got (more like... I've got) more eyeballs than dollars. There you go, I made bunch of eyeballs and finish it with golden glitters. Yum.

Here is a sneak peek of a mural that Sanchia and I have done for a T Shirt shop at Plaza Indonesia, T-Lab.

Awesome concept where you can make T shirt by selecting the shirt, the image you want to be added on it and bosch bosch bosch... ta daaaa! A brand new T-shirt just for you.

What we did is, we put our thinking cap for a week, grab some chalks and we calculate all the possible equations needed to make a great mural, and... wait, this is s great mural! We left it on the wall.

So, hear hear people...

The store is softly opened on Wednesday, the 6th

The New Factory at Xikang Road holds a Legal Graffiti event every Saturday. They provide a big white wall with all the markers you need.

Join them next Saturday May 16th with a bunch of kids from the Shanghai French School.

English Class on a Saturday Morning

My neighbour, Leslie, invited me to volunteer teaching a few classes in a migrant school in Pudong, Shanghai this weekend. Their school is not fancy, but I would say it is in a very good condition for the students to get good educations.

I've always enjoyed teaching, so of course I won't miss this chance.

We review with the what they already learned from class during the week, and add a few extra lessons of singing, games, and vocabulary.

I had a very good time with them. They're very very smart!

They know a lot of the words in the textbook and they are very eager to learn more.

Of course, some of the are too shy but I give them extra points for waking up early on a Saturday morning to learn English.

An interesting article on Paulo Coelho's blog, that dude who wrote "The Alchemist"

Alan Cohen, a therapist who lives in Hawaii, is also working on this theme. He says that in his lectures he asks those who are dissatisfied with their work and seventy-five percent of the audience raise their hands. Cohen has created a system of twelve steps to help people to rediscover their “blessing” (he is a follower of Campbell):

1] Tell yourself the truth: draw two columns on a sheet of paper and in the left column write down what you would love to do. Then write down on the other side everything you’re doing without any enthusiasm. Write as if nobody were ever going to read what is there, don’t censure or judge your answers.

2] Start slowly, but start: call your travel agent, look for something that fits your budget; go and see the movie that you’ve been putting off; buy the book that you’ve been wanting to buy. Be generous to yourself and you’ll see that even these small steps will make you feel more alive.

3] Stop slowly, but stop: some things use up all your energy. Do you really need to go that committee meeting? Do you need to help those who do not want to be helped? Does your boss have the right to demand that in addition to your work you have to go to all the same parties that he goes to? When you stop doing what you’re not interested in doing, you’ll realize that you were making more demands of yourself than others were really asking.

4] Discover your small talents: what do your friends tell you that you do well? What do you do with relish, even if it’s not perfectly well done? These small talents are hidden messages of your large occult talents.

5] Begin to choose: if something gives you pleasure, don’t hesitate. If you’re in doubt, close your eyes, imagine that you’ve made decision A and see all that it will bring you. Now do the same with decision B. The decision that makes you feel more connected to life is the right one - even if it’s not the easiest to make.

6] Don’t base your decisions on financial gain: the gain will come if you really do it with enthusiasm. The same vase, made by a potter who loves what he does and by a man who hates his job, has a soul. It will be quickly sold (in the first case) or will stay on the shelves (in the second case).

7] Follow your intuition: the most interesting work is the one where you allow yourself to be creative. Einstein said: “I did not reach my understanding of the Universe using just mathematics.” Descartes, the father of logic, developed his method based on a dream he had.

8] Don’t be afraid to change your mind: if you put a decision aside and this bothers you, think again about what you chose. Don’t struggle against what gives you pleasure.

9] Learn how to rest: one day a week without thinking about work lets the subconscious help you, and many problems (but not all) are solved without any help from reason.

10] Let things show you a happier path: if you are struggling too much for something, without any results appearing, be more flexible and follow the paths that life offers. This does not mean giving up the struggle, growing lazy or leaving things in the hands of others - it means understanding that work with love brings us strength, never despair.

11] Read the signs: this is an individual language joined to intuition that appears at the right moments. Even if the signs point in the opposite direction from what you planned, follow them. Sometimes you can go wrong, but this is the best way to learn this new language.

12] Finally, take risks! the men who have changed the world set out on their paths through an act of faith. Believe in the force of your dreams. God is fair, He wouldn’t put in your heart a desire that couldn’t come true.

Another Mural for Happy Bridge Preschool.

The challenge: find a big scaffolding construction so I can go paint that high.

After many phone calls, I finally found a group of construction workers who are willing to build me one. Yaaaay!! *Anyone who needs scaffolding, or just great construction people, I will share with you the number of the laoban, Mr. Zhen - very efficient, fair, and surprisingly not a loud person.

Anyway,
here it is! I feel that I should show you the scaffolding itself.
And that bamboo weaving sheet is supposedly to keep me "safer"

Hey y'all...

I am back in China after 2 weeks back home in Jakarta to get a new visa for me to re-enter this land of too-many people.
As I have shared on previous entry, I did some projects while at home, which I am always glad to do. Like this mural for a production house down south at Antasari. At the end, it took 4 days, 22 hours, with the help of my 'apprentice' N'doy, who was a big help attending my brushes and paint cans, catching every drip and drop. And also some help by Nataya and a rising star, Aura Kasih, with the outlines of all the tiny circles...

Last weekend, 4 girls went out to visit Hangzhou.

There is a saying, that up above there is heaven, and below there is Hangzhou and Suzhou. Well... It is definitely true. Hangzhou is a beauuuutiful place. 2 days are not enough to explore the whole city. We took a 1.5 hour train ride from Shanghai South Station (A fabulous, very modern station, by the way... If only the people there are not pushing me around) arrived at Hangzhou by 9 am. The weather was not very good when we got there, but that didn't stop us. Luckily, the second day, the rain stopped and we can see the gorgeous view of the city. Here are some souvenirs...

Another good place to eat in Shanghai.

It's in the Nanjing Pedestrian Street area. We went for lunch and it was crowded. We were greeted by this wonderful waiter, he was cheerful and very helpful indeed to sit all 6 of us. Rarely found in China.

But anyway, Coco Curry have a very unique way of ordering your meal. They let you choose how much rice you would like to have, then your choice of curry: I had Vegetable (Eggplant and Spinach), but feel free to pick amongst the selection of Chicken, Pork, Beef, Seafood and many many more! Then, decide how spicy you want it to be, and any additional sides: Cheese, Egg, etc.

Then, they have this big jar of pickled ginger, you can have it as much as you want! Currrry good...

So after brunch, we took a walk down Nanjing Road until we reach People's Square.

Our destination is Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) to visit Salvatore Ferragamo's 80th Anniversary Exhibition.

I have to tell you, this guy is pretty awesome!

Originally from Italy, moved up to Boston, then Santa Barbara in the 20's and started his career by making shoes for Hollywood movies... And if I have to mention one name for the word 'avant-garde', Ferragamo is the man!

Let me start the walkthru...

These are the shoes from his early movies, Hercules...
They're so beautiful, I would wear them in my sleep.

He got so famous that quite a lot wealthy and powerful people from around the world asked his talent to create a custom made shoes for them. Like Maharani. A collection for Maharani of Cooch Behar in 1938. This collection was recreated on 2003 for the opening of Ferragamo flagship store in Ginza.
Maharani herself sent a bunch of gems, diamonds, etc. to Ferragamo in order to be put on the collection. Aren't they pretty...

Next is for the famous Lady Di.
It's a set of classic black bag and shoes.

And then, of course, a whole collection of flat shoes for Audrey Hepburn in 1954

And Marilyn Monroe,

Handpainted boots

Well, since this exhibition is like a tribute to Ferragamo, there is one room of artworks inspired by his works.

And a huge chandelier made out of all the perfume bottles of Salvatore Ferragamo

Although his shoes, bags and jackets are beautiful, I don't have to like all of his clothing line. Some of them are just too... crowded with animals and shoeprints...
No, they are not good for wallpaper either...

Saturday Brunch

Nothing beats a good Saturday Brunch.

This week, we visited Wagas at CITIC Square (Across Plaza 66 at Nanjing Xi Road)

I had their pumpkin-spinach-coriander-Swisscheese Panini. It is super delicious! Completed with a glass of Wagas Ice Tea: Ginger Ale, Tea and crushed ice. Perfect.

Hans ordered a big serving of Caesar Salad. I have to say, it is one of the best if not biggest salad...

Indian in China

Last Friday, we found a very good Indian restaurant. At least, that's what I thought of the Rice and the Naan Cheese Bread.
It was huge and delicious.

Anyway, the restaurant is called Kaveen's Kitchen. Owned by an Indian and it has also Indian waiter who can only speak very little Chinese. It's located at Jing'An Area. Just a little walk across the bridge after Jing'An temple.

So I took a walk to the nearest bookstore. Guess what I found...

Brazilian Steak

Last month, we all went to Brazil. A Brazilian steakhouse in Jing'an area.

You pay 88 Yuan for all kinds of meat to be served on your plate, or 188 Yuan for Beef only.

The meat is okay (as I am not a meat-eater, this is suppose to be a compliment), salad is great, but dessert is not so hot a.k.a. I won't eat it ever again...

But for any of you never heard of Brazilian steakhouse, this is an all-you-can-eat restaurant with this Brazilian guy going around with a huge skewer of meat and never stop giving you meat!

Occasionally, he will say "Quack, quack!" that means, he's going to serve some duck... Which look the same as beef, or pork, or lamb when it's already on the skewer.

Sorry for the lazy update.

Anyways,
since the last time, I had been going around Shanghai again. And seeing the different sides of the places we've visited.
I have to tell you, it's great! Like when I found out about this building in Yuyuan Garden, (yep, that famous tourist destination...) that will keep you there for like, ever! It did that to me. It's filled with TOYS! Anykind of toys that you can imagine: Mario, Luigi, Doraemon, Pucca, Anime characters, Tofu Oyako, and many many more! Including tin toys like these...

I have been going there every weekend! And yes, coming home with something nice of course...
The building is at the end of Fuyou Road, just right across from Renaissance Hotel. You can't miss it.

Turns out, there are more to see at the back of Yuyuan Garden. Like the classic Chinese pinup girl posters!! OH, they are gorgeous! I got this one. Yes, I know she's Japanese, but you know what kind of posters I'm talking about.

Meeting The Godfathers

Me and my friend Peter went to Huaihai Lu to get some coffee. Ended up not finding a coffee place, but we sat down in this tiny open cafe at Huaihai Park for a glass of lime juice and Strawberry milkshake. There, a group of old men are enjoying their teatime as well. The Park reminded me of New York's Central Park. But then again, the weather got to chilly, so we left after Peter finished writing 9 postcards and I finished half of my homework.

Off to more good places with not so killing windchill...

Saturday Night Out

This Saturday was raining all day long. But we went to visit Pudong, the financial district of Shanghai to have a nice (American) dinner at a place called Blue Frog. Yadien's in town, so Me, Mita and Patra, and David showed him the Pearl Tower. (He wasn't quite impressed although it is the landmark of Shanghai...) It was not a good day to look around, so a few snapshots and we're off to the restaurant by asking direction to this lady. She seems to know her way...

We went to Taikang Lu today.
It's not far from Huaihai Street, but taking a cab is always good. It's not THAT close.
So, in Taikang Road, there is this teeny weeny alley that leads to wonderful shops and cafes.
I love this place. Next time, I promise myself to spend more time and check out the shops.

They have arts and craft shops, like this one of Indonesian crafts, named Hari Rabu (Bahasa for Wednesday)

And of course Chinese goodies. Beautiful shop!

But the palm leaves in Shanghai is not so much like in Indonesia.
Just because the old lady told us it's palm, but the one the priest had was so much bigger and it was just like the one back home.

So, question for everyone,
is this one type of palm plant?

Of all the things, I realized I haven't shared the place I'm living at.
Well anyway, here it is

This is the front entrance. 'Nuff said. Not my type of lighting arrangements...

And when it's time to do your laundry, well... you have to keep one side of your room to dry the clothings. Keep the heater in your room on for a night, and voila! Nice clean clothes in the morning.
As it is said on the box, "It's nice as A-B-C, Attractive, Beautiful, Clean"

Nice souvenir shops, more expensive than other place in Shanghai I've been, but bargain, bargain, bargain. It's always good.

This is the famous dumplings.
The line was, I mean, IS always too long, but they say it's really, really good.

Lots of cafes, lots of good looking restaurants, and it feels like you're in New York.
It's nice, but haven't actually sit and enjoy the scene. Maybe when it's warmer, later this year.

Hey everyone...

I'm in Shanghai now.
Thought this blog will help me to share some snapshots of the city.

Oya, by the way, we came here with an agent called, Mandarin Expert. They did a great work taking care of our enrolment and visa and such, but let me tell you, DO NOT use this agent if you are ever coming to China. We found out that we were not picked up at the airport, 4 of us had to find their way to their school, with no address, not to mention the ability to communicate with the taxi driver.

But anyway, we are doing okay now.
Here is the airport.

We arrived at 6.40 am on Saturday, 23 February 2008. It was freezing!
